“Red Lotus Sea, Udon Thani, Thailand”
I’m “5 minutes” kind of girl. When people try to wake me up in the morning my go-to answer is 5 more minutes either by saying it or showing them 5 fingers (with my eyes closed of cause). But this morning we woke up at 4.00 AM (SHARPE) no 5 minutes bargain because we will never miss our first sunrise over this magical Red Lotus Red (A Home for millions of Red Lotus stretch over 600 square acre wide lake in every direction)!!!
The red lotus sea is about 25 – 35 minutes drive from the city centre of “Udon Thani” province which is located on the north east part of Thailand known locally as “Isan”. You can simply follow the direction from your google map which will lead you directly to the pier(in Lake Nong Han, Kumphawadpi District) . Once arrived you will have to take a boat (2 options; big boat with capacity of 10 people or long tail boat) to the further part of the lake to see the red lotus. This should take about 5-10 minutes. I recommend long tail boat option as it is more authentic and more agile. Don’t worry you don’t need to book the boat, there are plenty of boats even before Sunrise. The boat service should be around 300 – 500 THB per hour. Just like many beautiful flowers, Red Lotus too only blossoms seasonally and the best time to catch her beauty is during the cool season in Thailand which is around late December until end of February. The best time for you to see Red Lotus sea in full blossom is most definitely during Sunrise (Around 5.55 to 6.10 AM). Not only that it is much less crowded but you also have the golden sky as your backdrop. But if you really can’t wake up that early you can still make it to the red lotus sea but remember to arrive before noon as the blooms remain open when the sun is not strongly shining down on them.
